A cross-sea highway project linking the cities of Shenzhen and Zhongshan in south China's Guangdong Province is to go into trial operation on Sunday, upon completion of construction over the past more then seven years. With a total length of 24 kilometers, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link consists of one underwater tunnel, two bridges and two artificial islands, crossing several main waterways of Lingdingyang Bay. The highway will shorten the travel time between Shenzhen and Zhongshan from two hours to 30 minutes. Seen from above, the link is in an S shape. With two-way eight lanes, it has a designed speed of 100 kilometers per hour and a lifetime for about 100 years. The highest point of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is 91 meters above the sea surface, which is as tall as 30 stories. Such a height is designed to accommodate the passing through of large ships. The west artificial island is the entrance of an underwater tunnel stretching 6.8 kilometers. It is in a diamond shape, which will reduce the impact of waves. The lowest point of the immersed tube underwater tunnel measures 39 meters below the sea level.
